Kia Picanto (JA): Radar type autonomous emergency braking / System setting and activation

System setting

The driver can activate the AEB by placing the ignition switch to the ON position and by selecting 'User Settings', 'Driving Assist', and 'Autonomous Emergency Braking System'. The AEB deactivates, when the driver cancels the system setting.

The warning light illuminates on the LCD display, when you cancel the AEB system.

It illuminates even with the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) state 2 OFF. The driver can monitor the AEB ON/OFF status on the LCD display. When the warning light remains ON with the AEB activated, have the system checked by a professional workshop. Kia recommends to visit an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.

The driver can select the initial warning activation time in the User Settings and Driving Assist in the instrument cluster LCD display. The options for the initial Forward Collision Warning include the following:

  • EARLY - When this condition is selected, the initial Forward Collision Warning is activated earlier than normal. If the “EARLY” warning seems to be too sensitive, change it to “NORMAL”. If the vehicle ahead suddenly stops, the warning may seem to be late even if the “EARLY” condition was selected.
  • NORMAL - When this condition is selected, the initial Forward Collision Warning is activated normally.
  • LATE - When this condition is selected, the initial Forward Collision Warning is activated later than normal. Select this condition only when traffic is light and you are driving at low speed.

Prerequisite for activation

The AEB gets ready to be activated, when the AEB is selected on the LCD display, and when the following prerequisites are satisfied.

- The ESC is activated.
- The driving speed is over 10 km/h. (However, AEB is activated within certain driving speed.)
- When recognizing the vehicle in front. (However, AEB does not activate according to conditions in front and vehicle systems, but it notices only certain warnings.)

WARNING

  • The AEB automatically activates upon placing the ignition switch to the ON position. The driver can deactivate the AEB by canceling the system setting on the LCD display.
  • The AEB automatically deactivates upon cancelling the ESC, even with the AEB system ON, and the driver will not be able to activate the AEB on the LCD display. In this case, the AEB warning light will illuminate, but it does not indicate a malfunction.
  • Set or cancel AEB with controlling switches on steering wheel after stopping the vehicle in the safe place for your safety.

The AEB system is to reduce or to avoid accident risk. It recognizes the distance from the vehicle ahead through the sensors (i.e. radar), and, if necessary, warns the driver or applies emergency braking of accident risk with the warning message or the warning alarms.

The AEB produces warning messages and warning alarms in accordance with the collision risk levels of followings like vehicle’s sudden braking in front or lack of vehicle to vehicle distance.
