Description and operation
Crankshaft
Position Sensor (CKPS) is one of the most important sensors of the
engine control system that detects the crankshaft position. If there is
no CKPS signal input, the engine may stop.
Installed
in the ladder frame, this sensor generates alternating current by
magnetic flux made by the sensor and the target wheel when the engine
rotates. The target wheel consists of 58 slots and 2 missing slots on
360 CA (Crank Angle). For ISG type, the ISG function receives reliable
information about crankshaft position during all modes of operation. The
CKPS in ISG function ensures short restarting time for engine and
efficient combustion.
Two separate differential channels for speed and direction information respectively.
Phase separation of the 2 channels delivers information on rotation direction.

Repair procedures
| 1. | Check signal waveform of CKPS and CMPS using a KDS.
Specification: Refer to "Waveform" |

| 1. | Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal. |
| 2. | Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector (A).
 |
| 3. | Remove the engine room under cover.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Under Cover")

| 4. | Remove the sensor (A) by loosening the mounting bolt.
Crankshaft position sensor mounting bolt:
9.8 - 11.8 N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft) |

| Tighten the component to the specified torques. |
| •
| If the component has been dropped, inspect for damage before installation. |
| •
| Apply engine oil to the O-ring. |
| •
| Carefully insert the sensor into the installation hole without damaging it. |

| 1. | Install in the reverse order of removal. |
Troubleshooting
The
above graph shows waveforms of a typical Crankshaft Position Sensor
(CKPS) and a Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) at idle. The PCM controls
the injection and ignition timing by using these signals.
Generally,
CKPS signal is used to detect the piston position and CMPS signal is
used to detect the Top Dead Center of each cylinder.

1.Disconnect the negative(-) battery terminal.
2.Remove the crash pad lower panel.

3.Remove the steering column upper and lower shrouds.

Inspection
1.With the washer motor connected to the reservoir tank, fill the reservoir tank with water.
Before
filling the reservoir tank with water, check the filter for foreign
material or contamination.
