Repair procedures

Removal
Engine removal is not required for this procedure.
   
•
Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
•
To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
   
Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection.
1.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2.
Remove the air cleaner assembly.
(Refer to Intake and Exhaust System - "Air Cleaner")
3.
Remove the RH side front wheel.
(Refer to Suspension System - "Wheel")
4.
Remove the engine room under cover and RH side cover.
(Refer to Engine and Transaxle Assembly - "Engine Room Under Cover")
5.
Drain the coolant.
(Refer to Cooling System - "Coolant")
6.
Remove the drive belt.
(Refer to Drive Belt System - "Drive Belt")
7.
Remove the alternator.
(Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Alternator")
8.
Remove the drive belt tensioner
(Refer to Drive Belt System - "Drive Belt Tensioner")
9.
Remove the water pump.
(Refer to Cooling System - "Water Pump")
10.
Remove the crankshaft damper pulley.
(Refer to Drive Belt System - "Crankshaft Damper Pulley")
11.
Remove the crankshaft position sensor (CKPS).
(Refer to Engine Control / Fuel System - "Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS)")
12.
Remove the warm-up catalytic converter (WCC) upper stay (A).
Tightening torque :
18.6 - 23.5 N·m (1.9 - 2.4 kgf·m, 13.7 - 17.4 lb·ft)

13.
Remove the intake manifold.
(Refer to Intake and Exhaust System - "Intake Manifold")
14.
Remove the thermostat and heater pipe.
(Refer to Cooling System - "Thermostat")
15.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
(Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly - "Cylinder Head Cover")
16.
Install the jack to the edge of upper oil pan to support the engine.
   
Insert the rubber block between jack and oil pan.
17.
Remove the engine mounting support bracket (A).
Tightening torque :
49.0 - 63.7 N·m (5.0 - 6.5 kgf·m, 36.2 - 47.0 lb·ft)

18.
Remove the timing chain cover & oil pump assembly (A).

   
•
Remove thoroughly sealant and oil etc left at the sealing surface after remove the chain cover and oil pan. (If any impurities are left at the sealing face, oil may leak after reassembly even with the sealant application.)
•
Do not disassemble the oil pump (A) from timing chain cover & oil pump assembly because it is supplied as timing chain cover & oil pump assembly.

Installation
1.
Install the timing chain cover & oil pump assembly.
(1)
The sealant locations on chain cover and on counter parts (cylinder head, cylinder block) must be free of engine oil and etc.
(2)
Before assembling the timing chain cover, the liquid sealant should be applied on the gap between cylinder head and cylinder block.
Assemble the part within 5 minutes of applying sealant.
Bead width : 4.0 mm (0.16 in.)

(3)
Apply liquid sealant on chain cover & oil pump assembly.. Then, assemble the part within 5 minutes of applying sealant.
Sealant should be applied in a continuous bead in each of the areas indicated below.
Bead width
A : 1.5 - 2.5 mm (0.06 - 0.10 in.)
B : 2.5 - 3.5 mm (0.09 - 0.14 in.)
C : 3.0 - 4.0 mm (0.12 - 0.16 in.)

   
When installing the timing chain, be careful not to remove the applied sealant from the timing cover by contacting with other parts.
(4)
After applying the engine oil, install the new O-ring (A) on the cylinder block and ladder frame.

(5)
The dowel pins on the cylinder block and holes on the chain cover & oil pump assembly. should be used as a reference in order to assemble the chain cover & oil pump assembly correctly.
Tightening torque
A :
9.8 - 11.8 N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft) -1EA
B :
18.6 - 23.5 N·m (1.9 - 2.4 kgf·m, 13.7 - 17.4 lb·ft) -12EA
C :
44.1 - 53.9 N·m (4.5 - 5.5 kgf·m, 32.5 - 39.8 lb·ft) -3EA

   
Do not start the engine or perform pressure test within 30 minutes after assembling the chain cover & oil pump assembly.
2.
Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
